Yakumo Shrine

2024.9.9

Yakumo Shrine, located in Yakumo Town, Hokkaido, was founded in the Meiji era by Tokugawa Keikatsu, the former lord of the Owari clan. Tokugawa chose the land around the Yurakubu River and named it “Yakumo,” aiming to build an ideal community. In 1884, the shrine was established to serve as a spiritual support for settlers, and it received a sacred spirit from Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya in 1886, an honor granted only to Yakumo Shrine by Emperor Meiji.

The shrine has been relocated several times over the years, and its current location was established after World War II. Surrounded by beautiful nature, Yakumo Shrine offers visitors a peaceful place to reflect on the region’s history and Tokugawa’s contributions to Hokkaido’s development.
